Junior Gung Fu

Junior Gung Fu is for boys and girls ages 7 1/2 to 13, and focuses on the fundamentals of Gung Fu. Instruction includes basic punches, kicks, blocks and forms, and classes emphasize self-control, respect for others and positive self-esteem. In addition to Martial Arts training, classes include activities, lessons and drills that emphasize character development, life skills and personal fitness.

Junior Gung Fu classes are held twice per week, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 - 6pm. Classes are fun, full of activities and are taught in a supportive, energetic, disciplined environment. In addition to learning self defense skills and participating in physical activities, this 60 minute class provides a great opportunity for kids to have fun, develop good habits, make new friends and learn non-violent solutions to conflict.

It is important to note that the junior classes taught at Black Tiger Academy focus on the whole child. Our martial arts classes focus on:

• Improving physical strength, coordination, flexibility and balance.
• Improving mental focus, concentration, behaviors and attitude.
• Improving emotional behaviors, social skills, self-control, patience and respect for self and others.
• Improving moral attitudes, honesty and the importance of making good choices.

The Junior Gung Fu class is limited to 24 students and we test monthly for "sashes" or belts. Through practice and hard work students learn what is necessary for promotion, and a list of names is posted monthly. Because it is our goal to also see students grow and improve at home and at school, each month with the help of the teacher or parent, the student sets personal improvement goals. We have seen much success with this part of the program.

Once a student has reached the level of Purple Sash, he will be invited to attend the Intermediate Junior Gung Fu class on Tuesdays from 5-6pm. During this class the student will refine his forms, be trained in advanced kicks and techniques, and be introduced to the Chinese Broadsword. There is no additional charge for this extra class, and selected Intermediate students will also be invited to help during the Monday Beginning Junior Gung Fu classes.

To learn more, please call or stop by and observe a class. It is important that both the parent and the child feel comfortable in the school that you choose. Because we believe that happy students are returning students, no contract is necessary at Black Tiger Academy. At the time of enrollment one month tuition plus a one month deposit is collected. In addition you do not need to purchase a large assortment of gear up front. Gear is required as the student needs it and the first piece of gear (gloves) is not needed for several months. There is much for a child to learn in the first several months that does not require martial arts gear. When the student is approximately 13 years old, they will graduate to the Teen/Adult class which offers similar instruction with more challenge!
